A Nourishing Skin and Body Routine for Women in Midlife
As the seasons shift from the softness of spring to the vibrant energy of summer, our bodies and minds begin to respond in quiet but powerful ways. Longer days, warmer nights, and changes in temperature and humidity can impact everything from our skin to our sleep. For those of us entering the season of midlife—when hormones begin to shift and the body asks for gentler, deeper support—this transition becomes even more important to honor.
Here’s a look into my daily summer transition routine that supports my skin, body, and mind during this beautiful season of change.
1. Start the Day Gently: Warm Lemon Water & Stillness
I begin each morning with a cup of warm water and fresh lemon. It’s a small but mighty ritual that helps wake up my digestive system, gently detoxify my body, and hydrate me after a night’s rest. Lemon is rich in vitamin C and can support healthy skin from the inside out, especially as collagen production naturally declines during perimenopause.
Next, I sit quietly with my morning coffee. This pause—before the day fully begins—is where I ground myself. No scrolling, no to-do lists, just breath and sips. In this stillness, I set the tone for a calm, intentional day.
2. Morning Movement & Nourishment
Once the house is quiet and everyone is off to school and work, I shift into my morning routine. It always begins with a protein-rich breakfast. Prioritizing protein helps stabilize blood sugar, reduces cravings, and supports lean muscle—which is especially important as metabolism slows in the 40s and 50s.
After breakfast, I move into a half-hour strength training workout, followed by simple, functional movements that target my hips, knees, and legs. These areas tend to weaken as estrogen declines, so I focus on building support and stability. I wrap up with gentle stretching to increase flexibility and promote circulation, which is key to healthy, glowing skin.
3. A Nighttime Shower Ritual for Skin Health & Hormone Support
In the summer, I prefer showering in the evening—it not only washes away the sweat and dust of the day, but also helps lower body temperature and signal to my body that it’s time to wind down.
Here’s what my evening skincare and bath ritual looks like:
Dry Brushing: Before showering, I take a few minutes to dry brush my skin in long, gentle strokes toward my heart. This boosts circulation, encourages lymphatic drainage, and removes dead skin cells—perfect prep for a refreshing summer shower.
Handmade Bar Soap: I cleanse with a natural, moisturizing bar soap. It keeps my skin clean without stripping it of essential oils, which is vital as hormonal changes often bring drier skin.
Sugar Scrub for Problematic Areas: I gently exfoliate my elbows, knees, and any rough patches with a handmade sugar scrub. This helps polish the skin and improve texture, while nourishing oils keep it soft and smooth.
Body Butter: After drying off, I massage a rich, whipped body butter into damp skin. It locks in moisture, soothes dry patches, and helps support skin elasticity—especially important as collagen levels decline.
Magnesium Cream on Knees & Neck: Magnesium is my secret weapon. I rub a bit of magnesium cream into my knees and neck to relieve tension, reduce soreness, and support deeper sleep.
Aromatherapy Roller : As I start winding down, I use my il Son aromatherapy roller. With its calming scent, it soothes my senses and helps ease the transition into rest.
Lavender Room & Linen Spray: Just before getting into bed, I mist my pillows and sheets with a gentle lavender spray. It signals my brain to relax, slow down, and welcome sleep.
4. Restorative Sleep for Radiant Skin & Balanced Hormones
I aim for a solid 7 hours of sleep each night. It may not always happen perfectly, but when it does, I notice the difference in everything—my mood, my energy, and most noticeably, my skin. Sleep is where true rejuvenation happens, and during this stage of life, prioritizing rest is one of the most powerful acts of self-care.
Why This Routine Matters Now More Than Ever
As I navigate the early stages of perimenopause, I’ve learned to listen closely to what my body needs. Skin becomes more sensitive. Muscles need more care. And sleep becomes precious. This daily rhythm—flowing with the season and rooted in natural, handmade products—helps me feel connected, calm, and supported through it all.
If you're feeling the shift too, I invite you to slow down and create a ritual that nourishes your body from the inside out. Let your summer routine be one of grace, intention, and deep, radiant care.
